Located in the southern part of the Cordillera Blanca, the Pastoruri is one of the few glaciers that survive in the tropical areas of South America. This glacier is around 8 square kms wide and around 4 km long. Unfortunately the glacier is melting quickly and has lost 22% of its size and 15.5% of its ice mass in the last 30 years. Pastoruri is located at 5250 m asl and has steep, cliff-like edges, with heavily crevassed areas - characteristics of a cirque glacier.

This is a 43km trek so you need to be in reasonble physical condition but if offers incredible views, passing by various Incan archaeological sites and ending at the world famous Machu Picchu  - one of the worlds top attractions.

The Inca Quarry trek is a good alternative way for getting to the Machu Picchu. It's a less crowded route that passes through wonderful Andean scenery with waterfalls, including also some interesting archaelogical sites such as the Cachicata Quarry.
