Huaraz is the trekking and climbing center of Peru and offers some of the best treks in the world.
The cream of the crop is the world famous Huay Huash trek that has a couple of variations but the standard routes are generally considered to be 10 to 12 days.
Many state that it is the best alpine trek in the world and it provides the visitor with incredible mountain scenery.
The area was made even more famous by the movie Touching the Void based on the real life exploits of climber Joe Simpson and his battle for surival on the mountain Siula Grande.
There are shorter treks in the area that are also popular and highly rated with the Santa Cruz trek being a popular option usually taking 4 days.
Short on time in Huaraz? not to worry there are days trips out to Laguna 69 or to the Llanganuco Lagoons which are both great ways to get a taste of the area.
4 Day Santa Cruz Trek Cordillera Blanca - Huaraz. This is one the most popular treks in the region due to its relatively short duration, moderate difficulty (many treks are 7 days or more in this area) but still providing incredible stunning views of the Cordillera Blanca mountain range. English speaking guide and quality equipment make this a fantastic option for those both short on time or wanting to acclimatize prior to a climb.
This trek is considered one of the best treks in the world and for good reason. The scenery is unsurpassed - dramatic snow topped mountains, sublime glacial lakes and the wonderful solitude of the mountains for one and half weeks. Definitely an adventure of a lifetime.
An exciting 1 day trip to the Llanganuco lagoons leaving from Huaraz, in northern Peru. Take this day tour and explore the wonderful Ancash Region, too often forgotten by travellers.
Take this day trip to one of the most beautiful lagoons of the Cordillera Blanca, Lake 69. A really scenic tour in a pristine environment. This tour goes up to an altitude of 4600 m and you will have the chance to enjoy the stunning views of some of the main peaks of the mountain range, such as Pisco (5752 m), Chacraraju (6112 m), as well as Yanapacha (5460 m) and Huascaran (6678 m).
This is another great option for a day trip from Huaraz. Located in the southern part of the Cordillera Blanca, the Pastoruri is one of the few glaciers that survive in the tropical areas of South America. This glacier is around 8 square kms wide and around 4 km long. Unfortunately the glacier is melting quickly and has lost 22% of its size and 15.5% of its ice mass in the last 30 years. Pastoruri is located at 5250 m asl and has steep, cliff-like edges, with heavily crevassed areas - characteristics of a cirque glacier.
