NAZCA LINES FLIGHTS

The Nazca Lines are famous around the world and to this day are much cause for debate amongst scholars, scientists, travellers and conspiracy theorists.

The fact is though we still don't know for sure how or why these geoglyphs were etched into the desert landscape near the town of Nazca.

There are over 300 figures in the area although usually about 10 or 12 are given the most attention such as the Hummingbird, the Monkey, the condor and the human (which is strangely alien looking)

Being so large they are best seen from the air and without a doubt taking a flight tour to see them is by far the best way. There is a viewing tower in one location but what you see it very limited.

Adding to  the mystery in the area is the fact that there have been several discoveries of skulls that are elongated in shape. Although it is known that ancient civilisations in the area practiced binding of heads of children to change their shape some believe there is something else about some of the skulls that have been found. Regardless of their origin we can still wonder why they would do this in the first place? Is it in homage to a past visit from a different race?

The Geoglyphs

The Nazca Line geoglyphs are a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site since 1994 and they are best seen by taking a flight in a small aircraft that flies over the most popular designs. Some of the designs can be seen from a viewing tower near the road or from certain hills in the area.

They were created by the ancient Nazca civilisation around 400 to 600 AD by scraping away the red surface rock to uncover the white rock layers below. The lines are very stable and have not suffered from erosion all this time due to the very arid and dry climate.

Whilst no one knows for sure why they created the Nazca lines it has been suggested it was some form of offering or worship to their gods so that they could see the designs from the heavens above. Others suggest they are evidence of a visit by aliens, especially with one of the lines looking like an astronaut or round headed alien.

Whatever the reason it certainly is strange that they would have gone to so much trouble to create so many, of such a large size, when they would not have been able to see the results for themselves.

It is prohibited to enter the areas by the lines either on foot or by vehicle and those that are granted permission for research purposes have to wear special protective shoes.

There have been several high profile incidents though whereby people have caused damage to the lines with the most famous being that of the Greenpeace activists that caused damage to the area by the hummingbird whilst unfurling a protest banner. The Dakar rally was also blamed for causing some damage and most recently in 2018 a truck driver caused considerable damage by driving over an area by mistake.

The following are the most famous and popular of the Nazca Lines geoglyphs but are just a sample of the hundreds that exist in the area covering over 50 square miles.
