ITINERARYITINERARY
You will meet at the local office at either 9.00 am or 14.00 pm depending on your preference. Once the group is ready you will board on a private transport and make your way out of the city of Potosi until you reach the equipment deposit, with a quick stop to purchase some gifts for the miners you are going to visit (normally coca leaves). Once at the deposit you will try your clothes and equipment and leave anything you won't need in a locker. Back on the bus, you will reach the foot of Cerro Rico where one of the entrances to the mines is located. You will have some time to take cool photos of the city from a viewpoint nearby before starting this incredible journey inside the mines.
You will follow the guide through reasonably wide trails that will take you to different areas of the mines. You will get to meet and speak to miners in their daily routine and give them the gifts you bought previously. You will learn about their extraction techniques and listen to their stories. As you go further inside, you will also pay a visit to one of the many statues of El Tío (''the Uncle''), who is believed to be the Lord of the underworld. People highly respect him and bring him various offerings such as cigarettes, alcohol and coca leaves in order to receive his protection. It is believed that if he is not properly fed, El Tío will get angry and cause destruction.
You will spend about 1.5 hours inside the mine. After the tour you will return to the deposit and leave your equipment there. The tour ends at around 13.00 (or 18.00 pm if you go in the afternoon) back to the office near the main square in Potosi.

IMPORTANT INFORMATIONIMPORTANT INFORMATION
While the tour does not involve particular physical efforts, there are a couple of things we need to point out. If you get ill or there is an accident during the tour while you are inside the mines, there are no medical facilities other than Potosi town and even these are basic. If things go wrong you are faced with the reality of travel in a remote area of a developing country. So we highly recommend first of all to spend at least 4/5 days at high altitude in order to get acclimatized and reduce risks of altitude sickness. On the other hand, if you have breathing-related problems or if you suffer from claustrophobia, panic attacks or just think you might feel uncomfortable in a dark and closed space, then you should not take this tour. You must have a valid travel insurance if you want to take this tour.
