This is the ideal option for those who do not have a lot of time and have a limited budget to visit Machu Picchu. Getting to Machu Picchu by bus rather than by train takes a little bit longer but it will allow you to will save a lot of money and still have a great time. You will pass through the beautiful scenery of the Andes and the sub-tropical forest of Cusco, meet friendly local people, and of course you will have plenty of time to see the incredible site of Machu Picchu itself.

ITINERARYITINERARY
DAY 1 – Cusco –Santa Teresa – Hidroelectrica – Aguas Calientes
Pickup early in the morning (around 7.00 am) from the meeting point in Plaza de Armas and we start our drive to the village of Santa Teresa where we will have some time to buy your lunch (at around 12.30). In the afternoon, we continue our bus ride to the village of Hidroeléctrica. From there you will start a wonderful 3-hour-walk (self-guided) to Aguas Calientes arriving at around 5.30 pm. You will meet your guide in Aguas Calientes and you will be taken to your hostel. You will have the rest of the evening as free time to explore the area or, if time allows, visit the local hot springs.
 
DAY 2  Aguas Calientes  Machu Picchu  Hidroelectrica  Cusco
Early in the morning, at around 4.30 am, you will take a 1-hour uphill hike to the site of Machu Picchu (or for an extra cost you can take the shuttle bus that takes 30 mins) where we will embark on a 2-hour guided tour of the site. We will see the most important monuments like the Royal Quarters, the Main Plaza, the Circular Tower, the Sacred Sun Dial, the Temple of the Three Windows, amongst others. Once the guided tour has finished you will have time to explore the site by yourself and take one of the optional hikes to either the Huayna Picchu or the Machu Picchu viewpoints.
After spending some time at Machu Picchu, at around 11.30 AM, you will need to start making your way back down from the site to Hidroelectrica (self-guided) in order to take your bus to Cusco that leaves at 3 PM. It takes about 3 hours walking to get back to Hidroelectrica. The bus arrives in Cusco at around 9.30 to 10.30 PM and will drop you off near the main square.

EXTRA OPTIONS
  • Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu climb - These are two optional climbs that you can add to your booking. The Huayna Picchu takes about 45 mins and it is usually full far in advance. The Machu Picchu climb takes about 1.5 hours. Tickets for climbing up to the Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu mountain must be booked in advance when booking Machu Picchu tickets. If you want to do either of these (you can only do one) you must book this at the same time and it cannot be added on later. Please make sure you check availability before booking these as there are limited spaces each day.

  • You must check in in Cusco a day before the tour. 
  • Groups are usually from 6 to 12 but there can be up to 16 people per group.
  • This tour is not difficult or strenuous but the site of Machu Picchu is at an altitude of 2400 meters so it is recommended that visitors should be a little acclimatised to best enjoy their visit. The walk up the hill to Machu Picchu from Aguas Calientes can be tiring for some but there is the option to take the bus for those who wish to for an additional cost.
