Arequipa

Arequipa Tours and Transport,Peru

Often considered the most beautiful of all the Peruvian cities Arequipa in Peru is a regular stop on most tourists itineraries visiting Peru. Known as "The White City" due to the large amount of white colonial building, the city is a living museum and designated a UNESCO world heritage site. Less hectic than Lima and Cusco, although actually more populated than the latter, it is the perfect place to relax for a few days, or to use as a base for excursions to places nearby such as Colca canyon or the nearby mountains of Misti and Chachani - both visible from the city and climbable by beginners. Having an altitude of 2238 meters (7638 feet) means the climate is pleasant ranging from 10 c to 25 c and with an average of 300 days of sunshine per year.

There are some interesting sites to see within the city including the very popular and photogenic Monastery of Santa Catalina. This large colorfully painted monastery will probably take a couple of hours to explore properly and it is recommended to take a guided tour to fully understand the importance and history of the place. Arequipa is also home to the "Ice Maiden" or also known as "Juanita the mommy" which is a extremely well preserved body of an Inca girl that was supposedly sacrificed as an offering to the Inca Gods sometime around 1450-1480 and is on display in a climatically controlled environment in the Catholic University of Santa María's Museum of Andean Sanctuaries (Museo Santuarios Andinos). Only discovered in 1995 high up on Mount Ampato during a climbing expedition by an Anthropologist she has fascinated scientists around the world due to how well she is preserved is and has been named by Time magazine as one of the world’s top ten discoveries.

Arequipa is also the starting point for visits to the wonderful Colca canyon which can be done in a (long) day but it recommended to be visited over multiple days to get the best experience. This is one of the best places in the world to see condors and there is a viewing point that is commonly visited by tourists where several of the large andean birds live and are nearly always spotted.

For those with an adventurous appetite it is possible to climb Misti or Chachani, mountain bike one the mountains or do some river rafting in the Rio Chili canyon.
