TARIJA - WINE - TOURS

Tarija is located in the south of Bolivia, not far from the Argentinian border and in some ways has more in common with its southern neighbour than the more northern areas of Bolivia.

It is probably the most understated and least visited major city by tourist in the whole country due to its location off the usually travelled routes and its lack of famous attractions.

That in itself can make it an attraction to some travelers though. A welcome retreat from the well trodden tourist path and a chance to discover hidden gems that most others don't get to see.

Renowned for being the wine producing center of the country, the Tarija region is home to some of the best wineries in South America and offers a spectacular landscape filled with gentle hills and extended vineyards.

Grapes are cultivated and processed following traditional techniques and with only little help of modern machines. Tarija is a charming and relaxing place that we believe is well worth your time - especially if you are a fan of good wine

Due to the altitude and climate where grapes are grown, wines produced in the Tarija region have unique properties that you cannot find anywhere else and some of the wines from the area have won international awards in recent years.

The large and peaceful central plaza in Tarija is perfect place to sit and relax. Nearby there are several restaurants, cafes and ice cream parlours and there are usually several portable vendors selling their offerings in the plaza itself.
Even though Tarija is the capital and largest city of the department the plaza can seem almost like the center of a sleepy town.

  • Lake San Jacinto  & Dam

    San Jacinto Tarija

Located south of the city center this lake is a popular spot to come in the afternoons and stay until sunset. Locals come and watch the water gushing from the dam and eat snacks from one of the many food stalls around.

CONCEPTION & WINE

Conception Wine Valley Tarija

Away from the city there is an area called the Conception Valley that is the principle wine making area of Tarija.

It makes for a fantastic half day or full day trip and there are a number of wineries that offer tours and tastings were you can see the grapes growing on the vines and learn about the techniques that are used in that establishment.

The winery ‘Casa Vieja’ is a popular visit as it is in an old colonial building (over 400 years old) and still uses many traditional wine making techniques.

Recommendations - Two reds that are well worth trying are both from the Campos de Solana winery and are blends called  "TRI"  and "UNICO" - both have won awards around the world.

There are many others that are very good also and, if you are a wine lover, you are sure to find something to your tastes.
