This is another great option for a day trip from Huaraz. Located in the southern part of the Cordillera Blanca, the Pastoruri is one of the few glaciers that survive in the tropical areas of South America. This glacier is around 8 square kms wide and around 4 km long. Unfortunately the glacier is melting quickly and has lost 22% of its size and 15.5% of its ice mass in the last 30 years. Pastoruri is located at 5250 m asl and has steep, cliff-like edges, with heavily crevassed areas - characteristics of a cirque glacier.

ITINERARYITINERARY
We will pick you up from your hotel (or a meeting point depending on location) and depart towards the south of Huaraz. After 25 km we get to the Recuay province (3300 m), and continue to Ticampampa (3400 m), Catac (3500 m), and Pachacoto. From here we will follow an unpaved road surrounded by wonderful landscapes of the highlands, characterized by straw fields, traditional sheep herders and cold wind.
After 15 km we will make a short stop at a small lake called Patococha with good chances of witnessing local birdlife - such as wild ducks, the Andean goose, Caracara birds and others. We then make our way to the colour-changing lake of Pumapampa (this effect is due to the reaction of the radiation from the sun and the minerals contained in the lake's water), and we will also stop at some ancient petroglyphs before we finally arrive at Pastoruri.
We leave our van here and start a 1-km hike to the actual glacier - this is an easy trek but you can also choose to do it on a horseback ride (extra price). Once at the glacier we will have time to visit this stunning natural attraction, together with an ice cave. We will spend about one hour at Pastoruri and then return to the transport. On the way back we will make a stop at Catac where you can buy your lunch (not included), eventually arriving back in Huaraz at around 18.00.
