ITINERARYITINERARY
  • Start time 7.30 Am – meeting up in La Paz
  • Finish time – arriving back in La Paz at 8-9pm approx
  • Altitude range – 4700 meters to 1100 meters
  • Skill level – confident beginners
  • Approximate riding time – 4 to 5 hours
  • Approximate downhill – 90% (some small uphill sections)
After safety check and advice from your guides the group will start the ride at 4700 meters. The first section is smooth tarmac and perfect for getting used to the feel of the bikes and warming your legs up. There is an uphill section near the beginning which can be tough at high altitude - if you struggle on this part you can always jump in the support vehicle for a while to get past it though! Shortly after passing through the checkpoint at Undavi we will arrive at the “Death Road” proper. Here the road turns into a winding dirt road and we will take a break at the top for some further safety instruction and a chance to see the road winding down the valley ahead. From here on you will not be pedaling so much but concentrating on controlling your bike as per your guide’s instructions. As you descend the road will sometimes be dusty and dry , others times it will be rocky shale stones and nearer the bottom there will even be waterfalls that you drive under. The views will always be stunning and there will be plenty of breaks for you to enjoy them, take some photos and let the slower people catch up (you go at your own pace always).
After 4 or 5 hours riding you arrive at Yolosa and La Senda Verde Animal refuge where there will be showers and a buffet lunch waiting for you. You will even be served a well earned beer and can relax whilst getting to know the rescued animals in the refuge. Towels are supplied.
At this point of your trip, you can do the optional zipline - please see details below. After the well earned chill out time we start the drive back to La Paz (approx 3.5 to 4 hours) first arranging the transfer to Coroico for anyone wishing to stay the night there instead of returning to La Paz (please see below). There is also the option of staying at La Senda Verde Animal Refuge and Eco-Lodge in one of the comfy cabins (we can book this for you also). Spending a night there will add a special touch to your Death Road adventure - this is the ideal place to spend a few days relaxing and reenergizing with the sounds of Bolivian nature before continuing with your trip.

Can I take a bike tour and catch an overnight bus on the same day?
A lot of people ask if they can do the Death Road bike trip and then catch a bus to Uyuni (or elsewhere) between 18.00 and 21.00 after the tour. We don't recommend this as the time of return from these tours can vary greatly - commonly it is between 18.00 and 19.00 but on a regular basis it can be 20.00 or even later. This is depending on a number of factors such as traffic, weather conditions (you go across high passes so snow and rain can greatly slow things down), the speed of your group of the day and how long they decide to relax at the resting point at the bottom. The guides generally go with the majority so if most want to stay and relax a bit they won't set off earlier for you to catch a bus.
Can I arrive on an overnight bus and start a bike tour the same morning?

Some people also ask if they can start a Death Road tour when they arrive in La Paz from an overnight bus from some other city such as Uyuni, Sucre, Potosi or Santa Cruz. These buses generally arrive in La Paz around 7.00 am but of course can vary. The leaving time for the Death Road tours is 7.30 am prompt and at least 15/20 mins away from the bus terminal. So the high risk you will miss the tour (and lose your payment as it is a no show) plus the fact you will be tired from the journey most likely means we strongly recommend you don't try to do this. It would be completely at your own risk if you did.
