This is our top-of-the-line tour to the stunning Rainbow Mountain operated by Alpaca Expeditions, one of the most recommended and popular companies in Cusco. While the itinerary is similar to our budget option, in this tour you will also get personal porters, trekking poles, dining equipment, drinking water and entrance fees included in the price. Transport and food will be of a better quality, and groups smaller. This is the ideal option for those who fancy a superior service for this challenging hike. Located in southern Peru, in the Cusco region, this route will take you through stunning landscapes with glaciers, snowcapped mountains and crystal clear rivers and lakes. Pass by local villages of Quechua descendants and explore the breathtaking surrounding nature. You can see a cool video of this tour here.
You will be picked at around 4.30 am by our private van from your accommodation in Cusco. Once the group is complete, we will start a 3.5-hour drive through traditional villages and incredible landscapes until we reach the starting point of the hike. Here we will stop and enjoy a lovely breakfast, freshly prepared by your trekking chef. After breakfast, we will begin the hike from Chillca (3,700 m/12,139) - from here, it will be a 4-hour hike to reach the famous Rainbow Mountain. Along the way, you will take in amazing views of the Andes, glacial peaks, red mountains, rocky hills, and traditional llamas and alpacas grazing along the valley. This is the only place in Cusco where you can see vicuñas in the wild. Once we arrive at the top of Rainbow Mountain, you will be given enough time to absorb the majesty of the red mountains that surround you. The Ausangate glacier peak, located in Cordillera Vilcanota Range, will be standing in front of you. This is the highest mountain in the Cusco region (almost 21.000 ft). While you take pictures and explore the area, our knoledgeable guide will explain how this rainbow of colors originated.
We will then begin our descent with a 2-hour downhill hike and then meet up with our trekking chef to enjoy a well-deserved, delicious hot lunch. After eating, we might visit some of the local homes and you will have the chance to see and learn the way of life of these people, Quechua-speakers who still practice the ancient traditions of the Incas. We will then return to the Chillca village to catch our private van back to Cusco. You will be dropped off at your hotel at around 7 pm.
